Where to go in Barbados

Bank: Republic Bank (Barbados) Limited

Account to ask for: e-Free

Scotiabank also operates in Barbados. We point people to Republic Bank because its branch network and electronic account are the stronger fit for someone just arriving, but either will work.

What to bring

What Republic Bank asks for when you open a e-Free in Barbados:

  • A completed account application, done in branch or through Republic's online onboarding
  • One or two valid forms of photo identification: passport, national ID card or driver's permit
  • Proof of address dated within the last three months, such as a utility bill. If the bill is not in your name, bring the lease plus an authorisation letter from the account holder
  • Proof of income: a job letter, a recent payslip, or business financials if you are self-employed
  • The minimum opening deposit for the account

If you are not resident yet

Opening before you have moved, or while your status is still being sorted out? Republic Bank asks for these on top of the documents above:

  • A utility bill covering the last three months, or your lease agreement
  • Proof of income: job letter and payslip, or financials if you run a business
  • A banker's reference letter from your current bank
  • Your work permit, CARICOM Skills Certificate or student documentation, where these apply

Good to know

  • No monthly maintenance fee. You get a free OneCard Visa Debit for 24-hour ABM and point-of-sale access, a pocket wallet to protect it, and monthly e-statements.
  • A driver's licence is only accepted alongside a second form of valid photo ID. A National ID card or passport works on its own.
  • Your address verification must be a utility bill no older than three months, and a cell phone bill will not be accepted. A bank statement also works.
This is guidance, and banks change their fees and document lists. Confirm the current requirements with Republic Bank (Barbados) Limited before you travel to a branch.
